Theatre School: Fall Session 2010/11
Just as the touch of a magic wand opened new possibilities for Cinderella, a single event can open worlds of growth for a child. Having fun learning to act, finding your place in the spotlight, and meeting friends to last a lifetime are just some of the magical adventures waiting for you at MTYP.
My own experiences at MTYP Theatre School have brought surprising rewards and developed skills I did not dream I would ever claim to have. I have heard that same story from many people, young and old, who have come to MTYP. The programs described in the following pages are intended to give that opportunity to every child. My wish is that you are touched by magic, and discover your magic touch at MTYP this year.
Kent Suss, MTYP Theatre Director ksuss@mtyp.ca
Adventures in Acting for Ages 3-19
From the Drama Explorers program for children age 3-6 to the Musical Theatre, Shakespeare and Young Companies for teens, courses are designed for every age and skill level. Actor training begins with creative exercises and improvisation to build imagination and teamwork skills, and progresses towards rehearsing scripts and performing in plays, movies, and musicals.
On Stage: Class Performances and Student Companies The thrill of performing is a big part of what makes theatre fun. Students in all classes have the opportunity to perform in front of an audience. Young people age 9 and up are invited to audition for one of MTYP’s student companies: The Junior Company, Musical Theatre Company, Shakespeare Company, and Young Company perform on stage with costumes, props, and lighting provided by our professional production team.
On Screen: Film Courses MTYP is a community leader in film education for young people. Our students have won awards with their own videos, and appeared in feature films. Acting for the camera and learning to make your own movies are the essential skills you’ll learn in courses and camps offered all year round. Film classes show their work publicly at The Big Screen Bonanza: a Festival of Student Films in Richardson Hall on Saturday, March 12 at 6 pm. New this year: film projects will be posted on a password-protected internet website. Students will receive the password so they can view and download their films at their leisure.
The Mainstage Connection
Seeing professional theatre for young people and learning to be an artist yourself is an unbeatable combination, found only at MTYP! All MTYP students receive free tickets to a series of professional Mainstage productions, presented in our theatre. To take advantage of this fantastic offer, please book your Mainstage Connection subscription today.

I CAN PRETEND: DRAMA FOR CHILDREN ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM
This year, MTYP is excited to offer two new class selections that are designed to meet the specific needs of children on the autism spectrum.
Your children will laugh, learn and rejoice in the power of dramatic play. Seasoned drama educator and author Demetra Hajidiacos will take your children on a magical journey they won’t soon forget! Dress-up, puppets, crafts, songs and storytelling will nurture creativity and assist children in developing social skills.
Children currently enrolled in an intensive intervention program such as Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), Relationship Development Intervention (RDI) and Developmental, Individual Difference, Relationship-based therapy (DIR/Floortime) will benefit most from these classes.
Weekly lesson plans will go home with families and may be shared with consultants, tutors, therapists and other caregivers to continue the fun at home!
