Turtle Island Arts School - In session with Director Ian Ross

The Turtle Island Arts School at The Forks, specializes in theatre classes for young people like your kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews, and friends!

Our exciting, supportive and FREE acting courses are geared especially for Aboriginal young actors (ages 10 to 18) and are designed to foster imagination, creativity, self-esteem and self-confidence.

Our theatre school classes run for 20 weeks (beginning in October) and offer plenty of theatrical fun for children and youth. We will explore our culture and traditions through playmaking, theatre games, puppetry, mask-making, theatre sports, improvisation, and so much more.

Registrations for the 2014 Summer Camp are now being accepted! All classes run Monday to Friday 12:30pm to 6:30pm. Register for one of our three week long camps today. Spaces are limited and spots fill up quick!

The Action Film Camp, held in a one-week session from August 11-15, 2014, allows students to explore the professional world of filmmaking both behind the scenes, and in front of the camera. This Film Camp will create an action packed script – filled with whatever our students’ imaginations can muster - and film it within the one-week intensive camp! At the end of the week friends and family are invited to watch the movie premiere masterpiece created by the campers.

Legends from the Future Theatre Camp (August 18-22 for ages 10-13) will explore stories from the dawn of creation and discover ways to recreate those stories into our own futuristic tales of adventure! Over the course of the 5 day camp students will develop a script, rehearse and put up a final show on the last day of camp! Friends and family are invited to watch the final production.

Stories from the Streetz Theatre Camp (August 25-29 for ages 14-18) gives students the opportunity to recreate centuries-old cultural stories into current, urban tales. Students will learn the basics of rapping, beats, and performance. The 5 day camp will write, rehearse, and perform their play for an audience of friends and family on the final day.

A note from the Director:

“Theatre has made my life better in every way.  I have learned empathy, how not to judge people, how to love better and feel better about myself.  It is one of my goals in life to share these teachings with young people.  Being young today is particularly difficult, and I know that theatre can enrich the lives of youth as they grow in this journey of life.  My staff and I will bring all of our skills and experience to helping young people learn and develop through the theatre and film classes we offer.”
